Village

This village makes up the Piešťany border from northeast. Its position is formed by River Váh from west and mountain range Považský Inovec from east. It is thought, the village belonged to Bana Castle Estate and, after its destruction, to Tematín Castle Estate. The first written record about village comes from 1348. After gaining access to archives in Hungary, it could be possible to uncover older references about the village. During the 16th - 18th century Moravany changed hands several times in a form of a gift or simply on basis of selling and buying. The village belonged to Csáky family, Motešický clan became the owner in 1770 and Zedtwitz family gained it in 1870.

Part of Piešťany Spa is located on Moravany land. Large part of the village is in P protected Spa area and that is why great attention is paid to environmental issues. Several natural, geological, mineralogical, paleothic, archeological, sacral and cultural objects can be found here. One of them is a Renaissance castle from 16th century. In 18th century, castle was rebuilt in Baroque style and a chapel was constructed in place of the east bastion. The castle was and still is a place where various gatherings and conferences take place, like those for painters, graphic artists, sculptors, musicians.... The nearby park is state protected object and you can find there very specific flora. There was a narrow-gauge railway (app. 12 km long) heading from the castle to the nearby forrests. Carriages with lumber were sent down in a free fall. We can learn about this unique technological relic along the Moravany forrest educational footpath. It starts just behind the Striebornica water reservoir. Several water mills were on Striebornica creek. There is a garden and forrest cabin area nearby. Small cave is hidden in the forrest, direction recreational area Výtoky.

Venuša

Moravany nad Váhom figures in European archeological maps thanks to remarquable Stone Age sites. The village is mostly known for a small, 7.6 cm tall statuette known as „Venus from Moravany“. It is the oldest proof of artistic craftsmanship in Slovakia. It was carved out from a mommoth tusk some 22 800 years ago. According to experts, three „Venuses“ were found in Moravany. One was ploughed out from a field by a farmer and he gave it to a German manufacturer whose name was German. German archeologist L. Zotz took away the other two (7.6 and 40 cm tall). It was managed to have the smaller one returned from the Paris Museum of Mankind. You can admire it in Bratislava Castle exhibition. Other Stone Age objects were found in the area, like mammoth bones and molars, conch necklesses from paleolithic limpets, cylindric bone pearl, workshop for hunting tools with around 200 spikes. Several tools were made from rare firestone not to be found in Slovakia - proof of lively trade. Apart of upper paleolithic settlements, neolithic and eneolithic hamlets can be found there as well as habitations from the Bronze and Iron Age. Stilus, an iron tool for writting, is one of the most important finds and proofs of writting abilities of early man in Slovakia. It is tied, without any doubt, to Kostolec, a nearby noble estate with a rotunda from Great Moravia era.

The oldest monument in village is the St. Martin from Tours church. It lies in cemetery above the village, along with chapel consacrated to Our Lady avany of Sorrows, patron saint to Slovakia. It was built in 15th century on Roman church foundations from the first half of 13th century. It has roof with wooden shingles and fired bricks floor. A sextagonal tower was added to the west side of church in 16th century. In the following century, further adjustments with Baroque elements were made. Baroque chapel was built on south side of church in the second half of 18th century. According to a legend, the church served as mosque during Turkish raids in Slovakia. It is possible that Alexander Rudnay (1760 - 1831), the bishop from Ostrihom (Estergom) and Hungarian cardinal - primate, visited the church frequently while studying in Moravany as a child. We can find the count Jozef Motešický’s grave in the cemetery, close to the village upper church. The grave is marked with his family coat of arms. New church consacrated to patron saint Our Lady of Rosary was built in 1873.

At the western foothills of the mountain range Považský Inovec, a loess gorge Great Trench, nearly 20 m deep and several hundred meters long with area of 0.85 hectare, spreads out. It was created naturally by gully erosion in less than 100 years. It was declared a protected creation of nature because it is a rare example of slope modelling and significant paleolontogical and archeological site. It has significant scientific value as it represents a sample of impressive gully erosion and it discloses the profile of the Trnava loess table from loess garret down to its underwall. The entire layered segment is beautifully developed in its entity and, from the point of paleonthology, it is far richer than any known profile from the fifth period of the Ice Age (Würm) in entire Slovakia. It is very important for study of this period and development of that era in the south borders of Carpathian mountains. There are other large loess profiles in its vicinity but none reaches degree of complexity that would equal  the Moravany loess gorge. Apart of important strati-graphic facts, the gorge walls offer rich paleontologic finds in form of mollusc fossiles and firestone industry blades, spears, chisels and spades).

The hunting industry thrives in Moravany thanks to rich occurence of deers, roebucks, wild pigs and other fauna. The group Marwan, children singing group, several other amateur music groups and formations are dedicated to music performances. The local fire-brigade has a rare museum piece in possession - a four wheeled, horse drawned, manual fire engine from 1928.

In the village, there is a shopping centre offering services along with several guesthouses, restaurants, pubs and confectionary shops. Moravany nad Váhom offer, apart from nice surroundings and cultural and social events, a gym, massages, tennis courts, quality football pitch, horse ridding, cyclotourism.
